Wuffingas Equipment Guide

Once you are a full member of Wuffingas, this is the guide to strive for.  Not everyone can afford all these article on day one, or even after a few months, nor do we expect you too, ...but once you have decided to join the ranks of Knights, Squires, and Advanced Man at Arms, this is a good guide to motivate you.

This is a listing of the minimum items required to “Fully” participate in Wuffingas event/show (depending on persona impression stated below).  You may, of course, have extra items, as appropriate to persona (e. g., jewelry items, cloaks, hoods and other headgear, etc).  As stated per the Articles you have two years from the time of your “Fourth” event, to acquire these items.  Most of them can be, and usually are, home made by our Pages, Squires, and Men at Arms.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT – CLOTHING/PERSONAL AFFECTS:

Every member is required to own:

.  Plate (made of wood or ceramic pottery) can be purchased cheaply almost anywhere.
.  Spoon (made of horn, wrought iron, or wood)
.  Eating knife (single-edged variety).  Try to both purchase and make a blade befitting your persona.
.  Drinking vessel (made of wood, horn, ceramic pottery)

The standard required items of gear for a non-combatant full member is as follows:

For Men:  As an example we have gone with a crusader era, adjust to your persona, time period, and culture.
            .  Undertunic (shirt) and
    .   Braies (period underwear)
.  Overtunic  Simple wool, linen, hemp, flax, etc.
.  Chausses (also called hosen)
.  Garters (of fabric or leather) if applicable
.  Belt (with “D-style” buckle) and pouch
.  Turnshoes, boots, Gilles, or last-built shoes (of approved period
                pattern)
    .  Cloth coif
.  Comb (of horn or wood)

Other “persona-specific” items of kit can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

For Women:
            .  Chemise (undergown) and Braies
    .  Gown
    .  Veil and Wimple
.  Turnshoes, boots or last-built shoes (of approved period pattern)
.  Comb (of horn or wood) Or clothes applicable to your persona, so long as they are made from period’esque fabric.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT – CLOTHING/PERSONAL AFFECTS:

Optional items of equipment for non-combatants (depending on persona’s wealth and importance) are:

For Men:  [Crusader items  are given as an example].  You may find equivalents to any persona and any period of time within our setting.

.  Cloak (woolen, of semicircular cut)
    .  Hood
    .  Garnache (a woolen, poncho-like garment)
.  Gardecorps (a variant of the Garnache)
    .  Pattens (wooden overshoes)
    .  Dagger (of approved pattern)
    .  Gloves
.  Flask or bottle of leather or metal
    .  Waxed tablet with stylus
    .  Gloves
    .  Jerkin (leather)

For Women:

.  Cloak (woolen, of semicircular cut)
.  Chausses (just above the knee)
.  Garters (of fabric or leather)
    .  Pattens (wooden overshoes)
    .  Dagger (of approved pattern)
    .  Gloves
.  Mirror (of bronze, brass or silvered glass)
    .  Waxed tablet with stylus
    .  Belt
    .  Pouch (or basket)
    .  Pelison (a jacket-like garment)
    .  Crespinin (hairnet)

You are not limited to the types of items you own, but you should be able to justify how a person of your particular station would have acquired such items.  People in period didn’t frequently live above their means, and that can be a guide.  For instance, Clerical persona impressions would of course have to document a habit from the Order they wish to make an impression of.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT – WEAPONS AND ARMOUR

While weapons and armour is not required to participate, it must be remembered that Wuffingas is primarily War, Raid, Melee, -and tournament-oriented organization.  Those wishing to partake in the martial aspects of the Company should make every effort to bring persona appropriate armour into their kit.  As our knowledge grows, -our equipment requirements will become more exacting as we acquire a larger membership base.

NOTE:  All members involved in combat-related activities should at least have the following items:

. Sword (one rattan, one steel tournament blade and one wooden “waster”,
               With scabbard)

.  Aketon-gambasson quilted linen, double wool tunic,  (with or without high-buttoned collar, with elbow-length sleeves).  Period persoa.
The garment may be vertically quilted or quilted in a diamond pattern, and should be stuffed with cotton-wool-flax-linen, and made of either linen or cotton canvas.

.  Helm per realm marshals manual.
.  Haubergeon (of mail, scale or lamellar construction) or,

.  Quilted Cuisses (quilted vertically or in diamond pattern), stuffed with cotton, and covered with either linen or cotton canvas.  They should include a genoullier (knee armour) of cuir-boulli or metal.

For Companion-Sergeants:

.  Companion-Sergeants should have all the military equipment required of Companion-at Arms, save the addition of the livery of a knight’s household on shield and clothing.  Affiliation is essential in the Company.

For Companion-Squires/Bachelors:

.  Companion-Squires/Bachelors should have all the military equipment that is required of a Companion-at-Arms, but is strongly urged to begin upgrading their equipment to that of a Companion-Knight.  Companion-Squires/
Bachelors are aspirants to knighthood, and should have as an ultimate goal to maintain the dignity and station of knighthood (see notes below on “To Furnish One’s Helm”: Other Required Items for Companion-Knights of the Order).  In other words no matter your rank, persona or status you should always be striving for the greatest degree of authenticity you can afford.
